A mean season for Carolinas shrimpers

An unusually cold winter that decimated native shrimp has robbed the Carolinas of a spring delicacy.

Below-normal water temperatures killed virtually all the white shrimp that overwinter in South Carolina's estuaries, and N.C. officials also report dead crustaceans.

The cold heaped more trouble on Carolina shrimpers, whose numbers are also dwindling. Shrimpers are already being undercut by cheaper, farm-raised imports and, more recently, rising fuel costs.

S.C. fishermen who caught 1.3 million pounds of white shrimp last fall are now hauling up only handfuls, said Larry DeLancey, who oversees crustacean monitoring for the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.

"We haven't collected any white shrimp since January," he said.

Clean Catch Fish Market on Selwyn Avenue is offering fresh Florida shrimp as an alternative. But customers are grilling owner Bill Ryan daily about the whereabouts of the local catch.

"First of all, they want it fresh. There is a big taste difference," Ryan said. "Second of all, they want to support Carolina seafood."

For that, Charlotteans may have to wait awhile.

Brown shrimp, one of the three species netted in the Carolinas, are growing to catchable size, but the season isn't likely to open for a few more weeks.

"They keep saying two weeks, but they've been saying that for a while now," said David Meeks, whose Flying Fish Seafood & Co. makes a weekly run to Wilmington.

The business, which Meeks runs with his son Josh, sells Carolina seafood from a stand north of Davidson on Thursday and Friday afternoons, and at the Davidson Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. They've been getting by on white shrimp they froze last winter.

Federal waters off South Carolina will reopen to shrimping Tuesday, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council said last week. State waters - within 3 miles of the coast - will reopen only when brown shrimp reach marketable size.

Most white shrimp are caught while young in the fall, followed by a spring catch of those that have spent the winter in the estuaries. The spring catch has benefited in recent years from mild winter weather. N.C. shrimpers hauled in 1.7 million pounds last year, compared to 1.3 million pounds in 2009.

But the species is at the northern end of its range in North Carolina, said Rich Carpenter of the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries in Wilmington. They can't survive water temperatures below 46 degrees for more than a few days, and last winter dipped below that threshold.

"Anything left in the estuaries would be affected," he said.

DeLancey, the S.C. official, estimated that 99 percent of white shrimp there died. That means the fall harvest is also likely to be down, he said, but populations can quickly rebuild if wind and currents drive larvae northward from Georgia and Florida.

"Next winter will be the key," he said. "If we get some of those, they can build up pretty quickly."

WWDC 2011 Pre-Keynote Roundup and Coverage Details [Updated]

With just under two and a half hours to go before Apple CEO Steve Jobs takes the stage for his keynote address at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, it's time for us to set the stage with final details on the latest rumors and coverage information.

Attendees have been securing their spots in line early to ensure that they will have seats in the main auditorium rather than being shunted to an overflow room to watch the keynote on video.

Coverage

As we noted over the weekend, MacRumors will be offering live text and photo updates from the keynote through MacRumorsLive.com. The main MacRumors.com page will automatically redirect to MacRumorsLive as we get closer to the event, so stay tuned here. We will also be providing Twitter updates through our @MacRumorsLive account.

Apple has not yet offered any indication that it will provide live streaming video of the keynote.

MacRumors forum members interested in a "spoiler-free" environment to wait for the full keynote video to become available are gathering in our dedicated thread. A direct link to the official keynote video will be posted there when it becomes available.

Rumors

While it appears extremely unlikely that Apple will introduce a new iPhone today, the company undoubtedly has a full agenda as it seeks to show off Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5, and its new iCloud service. Rumors have suggested that the iCloud service could utilize a revamped iOS-based Time Capsule to serve as the hub for data access and potentially for caching software updates for other machines and devices.

One key part of the iCloud service that has been receiving significant media attention is a music streaming service to allow users to access their purchased music from a variety of Internet-connected devices. Apple is said to have paid the four major music labels up to $150 million for the right to offer the service, and with agreements reportedly also in place with the major music publishers, Apple appears nearly ready to go on that aspect of iCloud. The service has been said to come with a free trial period to be followed eventually by an annual fee in the range of $25.

iOS 5 has been kept under wraps by Apple thus far, although we've seen indications of enhanced notifications and widgets as well as "deep" Twitter integration. Another development comes from a leak on Apple's iTunes update pages, which revealed a new "Automatic Download" feature that could allow users to have updated apps and perhaps other content appear on their iOS devices without the need manually sync each one. It is unclear, however, whether the feature is directly tied to iOS 5 or if it could be supported with an update to iOS 4 in the nearer term.

Apple has also been working hard on Mac OS X Lion and a fair amount of information on the release has been made public through Apple's "sneak peek" offered last October and followed up with a series of developer preview builds pushed out beginning in February. Apple has said that Lion will make its debut this "summer", but we've been hearing variety of potential dates within that period for the launch, making it difficult to pin down how soon after WWDC we can expect it to ship.

Last-Minute Updates

- This is my next... reports that it has received information regarding iOS 5 enhancements including a new MMS/SMS messaging protocol and a new notification system involving a dropdown at the top of the screen accessible by swiping downward. The dropdown will also provide access to widgets for such items as weather and stocks. Finally, the lock screen is said to have been enhanced with notifications, allowing users to swipe a notification to go directly to the corresponding app.

WWDC 2011 liveblog Stream, Gizmodo Contradiction

Sorry to put a bee in the bonnet, but when it comes to the WWDC 2011 liveblog stream via Gizmodo we feel a contradiction has come into play.

Personally, we love Gizmodo and they have a good fan base and of course its fans will follow their liveblog. Gizmodo states that they will be giving readers real time commentary on all the news covering Apple’s big event ‘WWDC’ later today.

The event will cover announcements such as iOS 5, iCloud and Mac OS X Lion, and Gizmodo will post the best images live from the floor, this is a slight contradiction because it will not come direct from them being at the event, instead these images will come via other sites such as Technologizer, MacWorld, New York Times, Ars Technica, Wired and MacLife.

According to product-reviews.net Gizmodo had limited coverage of the WWDC 2010 event, and this was down to the fallout with Apple over the iPhone 4, hardware making it into Gizmodo’s hands before the official release.

WWDC 2011 event worldwide start times: Hawaii 07:00AM, Pacific 10:00AM, Mountain 11:00AM, Central 12:00PM, at 01:00PM in Eastern, London it will start at 06:00PM, Paris at 07:00PM, Moscow 09:00PM, Tokyo will be June 7th at 02:00AM.

Lauryn Hill Is Pregnant With Sixth Baby

Lauryn Hill is adding another baby to her brood. The former Fugees star announced over the weekend that she's expecting her sixth child.

Hill revealed the happy news while performing a concert at Detriot's Chene Park on Saturday.

"She told the crowd, 'I'm going to be taking time off to give birth'," Ashley Trybula of Detroit's Hot 102.7 told RadarOnline.com.

Hill has been hinting that she has a bun in the oven for several months.

"I keep having these children," Hill said two months ago while performing in Los Angeles. "I don't know if I'm the most fertile woman in America."

She seems pretty fertile to us, considering this will be her sixth child with boyfriend Rohan Marley.

Though she announced she's expecting, there's no word on whether she's having a boy or a girl or when she's expecting the new addition to her family.

63% SAY BUYING CHEAP CAR INSURANCE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN GETTING THE BEST POLICY

According to a new survey from direct car insurance and price comparison website car-insurance-uk-supermarket.co.uk, 63% of people in the UK believe that finding cheap car insurance is more important than finding the best cover.

Almost a tenth (9%) regarded saving money as all that matters when they buy car insurance. For this sizeable group, equivalent to 2.7m drivers nationally, what is included or excluded from their car insurance policy is not of interest to them as long as they are able to buy cheap cover.

Only 8% are likely to be willing to pay more to get better car insurance as they said that finding the best policy was more important than buying cheap car insurance.

A tiny proportion, 1%, did not consider price in making the policy selection.

Around a quarter (29%) thought that saving money on car insurance and getting the best policy were of equal importance. Many of these, presumably, would be willing to pass over some of the most 'no frills' car insurance quotes to get better cover but would still be ready to compromise on cover to save money.

Even if these last figures are added together, little more than a third (37%) regarded the cover to be as important or more important than the price they paid for car insurance.

Over a hundred respondents completed the survey in May 2011 via an optional online questionaire published alongside articles on the car-insurance-uk-supermarket.co.uk website.

The findings show that the high and increasing cost of car insurance has forced drivers to focus on reducing this cost, even although doing so can significantly reduce their cover.

Figures from the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) showed that 57% of people had reduced their level of insurance cover in 2009-2010 and the above perecentages would suggest that this figure may be even higher this year despite the risks of buying ever more 'no frills' car insurance policies that provide limited cover and often have a high excess.

Most price comparison sites have reported an increase in their use, consistent with the public's desire to buy cheaper cover following the increase in the cost of car insurance by 40% over the year to the end of March 2011 (as measured by the AA's Insurance Price Index).

It would appear that saving money by buying cheap car insurance via a price comparison site while paying limited attention, if any, to the associated policy features has become the norm for most people.

The car-insurance-uk-supermarket.co.uk has warned drivers that as car insurance has increased substantially in price that to maintain a reasonable level of cover, they should expect to pay more than last year even when they compare car insurance prices on a price comparison site.

Consumers should also scrutinise the cover provided by each car insurance policy before buying and they should be willing to pay more to get a prudent level of cover that will effectively meet their needs in the event of an accident.

About car-insurance-uk-supermarket:

Established in 2005, car-insurance-uk-supermarket.co.uk has been helping consumers to find economic car insurance quotes for longer than many of their competitors. As a provider of authoritative motoring and car insurance news, other websites republish their free news channels.

Apple news coming today: iCloud, Mac OS X Lion, iOS

Today at 1 pm Eastern, Steve Jobs will take to the stage at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in California to usher in some new Apple software products.

Though he's technically out on medical leave, Jobs is apparently able enough to do this, which is a great sign for his health (we hope).

We know he'll be introducing something called iCloud, a cloud service that many speculate will offer streaming music as well as other capacities.

iOS 5 for iPhone, iPad and Touch will likely get a big update, and the new operating system -- dubbed Lion -- for the Mac platform will get a modest makeover.

Many seem to be guessing that Apple is heading in a direction that ties all three offerings together -- a cloud service with Apple's desktop and mobile platforms.

Steve Jobs at WWDC in San Francisco

Moving on to Scott Forstall, the senior vice president of iOS software. So far, more than 200 million iOS devices have sold to date, making it the top mobile operating system, with 44% of the market, he says.

More than 25 million iPads have sold, along with 15 billion songs through the iTunes music store, making it the top music retailer in the world. More than 140 million books have been downloaded through the iBooks store.

More than 90,000 apps exist for the iPad on the App Store, Forstall said. In less than 3 years, the store has seen 14 billion apps downloaded total, with Apple paying out more than $2.5 billion to developers. There are more than 225 million customer accounts.

10:40 a.m.: Multi-touch gestures, Mission Control and AirDrop

Steve Jobs showed up to a standing ovation, then passed the stage to Phil Schiller, Apple's marketing chief.

Schiller said that Lion, the new Mac operating system, has hundreds of new features, including full-screen apps and multi-touch gestures. That means getting rid of scroll bars on the side of windows.

A swiping gesture can flip from one Web page to the next. A double-tap zooms into a specific section. A new Mission Control service compiles all running apps and windows on the desktop into one view with a pinch gesture.

Applications in Lion will automatically save your work -– when you quit and reenter, they'll revert to the window placement and text highlighting from when you left. Users can also see older versions of individual documents and do comparisons with past edits -- dragging and dropping portions from older versions into newer ones.

And with AirDrop, you can drag files to others in your network through WiFi.

----

Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive, is expected to take the stage at 10 a.m. today to keynote the annual Worldwide Developers Conference at Moscone Center West.

Jobs, who has made few public appearance since taking another medical leave in January, will help show off a mysterious new Internet service, iCloud, that many predict will let users to store all their music online, allowing them to access and listen to it from a number of devices.

The new iteration of iOS5, Apple's mobile operating system, and Mac OS X Lion, the equivalent for Mac computers, are also expected to be introduced.

We'll be updating through the day, so check back soon and often!

Rockies Vs. Padres: Battle Of The Claytons Begins Colorado-San Diego Series

For more on the Rockies, visit Purple Row. To learn more about the Padres, head over to Gaslamp Ball.

Follow @sbndenver on Twitter, and Like SB Nation Denver on Facebook.

Jun 6, 2011 - The Colorado Rockies finish their nine-game West Coast road trip with a three-game set against San Diego Padres. The Rockies are currently 2-4, taking one game each from the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants. In all, they are now 5.5 games behind the San Francisco Giants in the NL West.

Monday's game is a battle of Claytons as Clayton Mortensen and Clayton Richard take the mound. Clayton Mortensen is still in danger of losing his spot in the rotation since Aaron Cook makes his season debut in Wednesday's contest. Mortensen didn't do himself any favors on May 31 when he allowed five runs in four innings. He walked four and struck out none. In five starts, he has a 5.02 ERA and a 1.465 WHIP. He could move back to the bullpen, allowing Greg Reynolds to be optioned to the minors.

Clayton Richard must be thankful that this game is being played in Petco Park. His home ERA is 2.42 in five starts, but winless in San Diego. His road ERA is 5.97. In his last start, he failed to complete five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and four walks. In eight career starts against the Rockies, Richard holds a 5.64 ERA with a 1.679 WHIP.

Mila Kunis & Justin Timberlake: The Most Inappropriate Award-Show Touches

During Sunday night's MTV Movie Awards, Justin Timberlake proved just how "totally platonic" his relationship with Mila Kunis was when he groped her like a crowdsurfer at Ozzfest.

Of course, Kunis was all too happy to return the favor, going low and grabbing JT's junk while the two — who, it should be noted, star in the upcoming comedy "Friends With Benefits" (and whose relationship has been the subject of much speculation in the past) — announced the nominees for "Best Male Performance."

Not surprisingly, in the hours following the Awards, Kunis and Timberlake's rather, uh, unique embrace became the most-searched thing on the Internet, and since the zeitgeist clearly loves some good old fashioned genital-groping, we'd be remiss if we didn't point out the fact that, over the years, MTV's award shows have basically set the standard for inappropriate touching ... we're sort of pioneers in that regard.

So, with Mila's and Justin's pawing still fresh on everyone's mind, here's a look back at some of the most inappropriate touches in MTV award-show history.

Howard Stern as 'Fartman' at the 1992 Video Music Awards
While Stern's ass-less chaps were certainly inappropriate, the reason we've included this bit here is the moment when Luke Perry (in prime "90210" mode) bows down and places two hands on Fartman's pasty cheeks. For added emphasis — and to allow the bit to stretch on for three agonizing minutes — Stern then invites a woman up from the audience to also grab a handful. Groundbreakingly gross.

Milton Berle and RuPaul at the 1993 VMAs
One of the most awkward moments in VMA history happened in '93, when the comedy legend presented with RuPaul, and unexpectedly grabbed the drag icon's breast. Ru responded by spitting "So you used to wear gowns, but now you're wearing diapers" (a reference to Berle's old cross-dressing comedy bits,) to which Uncle Miltie shot back "Oh, we're going to ad lib? I'll check my brain and we'll start even." Inappropriate and uncomfortable in every single way.

Lil Kim and Diana Ross at the 1999 VMAs
We weren't the only ones mesmerized by Kim's '99 VMA get-up, a sparkly number which left one of her breasts covered by just a pastie. Motown icon Diana Ross also couldn't take her eyes off the outfit ... or, her hand off Kim's breast, for that matter. Her brief grope was met with thunderous applause from the crowd, and remains one of the most memorable moments in VMA history.

Brüno drops in on Eminem at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards
In theory, Sacha Baron Cohen — in full Brüno glory — attended the '09 Movie Awards to hype his upcoming film and present the award for Best Male Performance. But his descent to the stage went awry and in the aftermath, he was left with his rump placed firmly on Eminem's face. The whole thing may have been planned, but Em's reaction — and the subsequent scuffle that ensued — certainly looked real at the time.

Robert Pattinson And Kristen Stewart Heat Things Up In "Breaking Dawn"

After sweeping the MTV Movie Awards last night, The Twilight saga is about to takeover again with the latest installment "Breaking Dawn."
The teaser debuted last night at the awards and only one word can be used to describe it: WOW!
Things between Bella and Edward really begin to heat up in this one. The trailer gives us a sneek peek at the wedding between Bella and Edward, their steamy honeymoon and of course Bella's pregnancy. Jacob doesn't seem to be happy about any of it.

Bonnaroo Turns 10: The 2011 Lineup & Preview

Each June, nearly a hundred thousand people descend on a farm outside of Nashville, Tennessee for one of the world's largest outdoor festivals.  The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is a 4-day, multi-stage camping festival held on a once serene 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee.

Rolling Stone magazine named the annual festival one of the "50 moments that changed the history of rock and roll."  The event is known for bringing together some of the biggest performers in rock and roll along with dozens of artists from that run the gamut of contemporary styles from hip-hop to electronica to Americana.

The 100-acre entertainment village will be abuzz with around the clock attractions.  According to the event organizers, in addition to the music stages there will be an on-site cinema, a silent disco, a comedy club, a classic arcade, a beer festival, and a music and technology village.

In its tenth reincarnation, Bonnaroo's 2011 lineup includes rap superstars Eminem and Lil Wayne, album of the year Grammy winner Arcade Fire, and rock veterans Buffalo Springfield and Dr. John and the Orginal Meters.  Other standouts include Swedish Europop diva Robyn, English folk rock band Mumford & Sons, West Coast indie folk rock band The Decemberists, mashup superstar Girl Talk, English songstress Florence + The Machine, and a cast and crew of indie rock's up and coming talent.

Last year's line-up included Kings of Leon, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, Weezer, Jeff Beck, LCD Sounsystem, Norah Jones, and Phoenix among many others.

First timers to the festival should be prepared to get wet and dirty.  There is ample mud and heat and it often smells.  Festival-goers report that the air stinks after the second day with so many campers gathered together in the hot weather. However, for the hardcore fans, it is obviously worth the minor discomforts.

The festival kicks off at noon on Thursday, June 9th and rages on until late Sunday night.  Tickets went on sale on February 19 and all 2011 General Admission Tickets are now sold out.  Each ticketholder for the 4-day festival received a specially designed wristband with a RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) chip that is unique to the individual.  You can visit the Bonnaroo Wristband Information page for more information.

Shavuot Menu

I thought I would share my menu with you – I am keeping it simple because I do not have the time to be in the kitchen for hours on end this week. Plus there is Shabbat to think about too.

Tues Night:

Light Fettucine Alfredo with a large leafy salad (Joy of Kosher Magazine)
Ice Cream – Cookies n Cream or Vanilla

Wednesday Lunch – we are invited out (yay!!)

Wednesday Night:

Breaded fish filets
Creamy Smashed Potatoes with Chives (JoK magazine)
Steamed Peas

Cheesecake for dessert – store bought.  Yeah I know – I have yet to master the art of cheesecake, so sue me!

Thursday Lunch:

We are doing fleishigs because my boys will be whining by then about how much dairy we will have had. Not that they are lactarded or anything but they are meat and potato people. However I am going simple – cold cuts, and potato salad (I want to make this one but the KoD doesn’t eat tomatoes), coleslaw, pasta salad – I might throw together a big leafy salad again – maybe something like this one.

Maybe red velvet cake for dessert?

I am not sure if I am baking challah – we need challah rolls for Thurs lunch with the cold cuts BUT I thought about making cheesey challah but have yet to find a good recipe.

Marking D-Day with massive U.S. paintball battle

(Reuters Life!) - Mighty forces are gathering in the U.S. and they're looking for a fight. They're well-organized, high-spirited and heavily armed -- with paintball guns.

In one of the largest paintball games in the world, some 3,000 people in Oklahoma will relive the events of June 6, 1944, D-Day, when German-occupied France was invaded by Allied Forces, marking a turning point in World War Two.

This year's Oklahoma version will mark the 14th time a D-Day-style paintball game has been staged. There's an Allied side and a German side, and even the French Resistance is represented, but it's not just a paintball free-for-all.

Instead, in a large, rugged park, Allied Forces and the Third Reich will compete to achieve certain goals based on the many individual battles that occurred 67 years ago.

There are mock tanks rumbling around, pyrotechnics exploding and soldiers tumbling out of plywood landing craft amid a cacophony of clacking paintball guns.

"The field sorts out the men from the boys," said Andy Van Der Plaats, a 64-year-old marketing consultant from North Fort Myers, Fla., and a high-ranking officer in the Allied paintball chain of command. "The adrenalin is just cranked. It's stressful."

It's a big deal in Wyandotte, population 500, where Dwayne Convirs created the event in 1997 to honor his grandfather, Enos Armstrong, a combat engineer who fought his way through Europe after landing in Normandy on D-Day.

The first version of Oklahoma D-Day drew 135 players, Convirs said. Since then as many as 15,000 people - including the families of players -- have shown up to either camp out on the grounds of Oklahoma D-Day Adventure Park or stay in nearby motels.

"This is their vacation," Convirs, 46, told Reuters. "It's not really about the game, it's about the event."

The big D-Day paintball battle takes place this year on June 11 after a week of preliminary activities including a flag-raising ceremony, a parade, military-style chapel services, and evening showings of movies such as "Patton," "The Longest Day" and "Band of Brothers."

At Oklahoma D-Day, the outcome is definitely not guaranteed. The Axis side has won the past three years.

While the ultimate result may not always match history, pains are taken to recreate certain historical missions, such as the capture and defense of bridges, churches, crossroads and towns. And all the while, thousands of paintballs are flying through the air; if you're hit, you have to sit out awhile in a "dead zone."

The game is taken seriously by those who spend $100 to play and a tidy sum to buy gear, including paintball guns, which can cost anywhere from a few hundred bucks to several thousand dollars.

REVERENCE

Despite the fun-and-games atmosphere in Oklahoma, there is a palpable undercurrent of patriotism and reverence for those who fought the real fight on D-Day.

For the past two years, Jake McNiece, 92, a D-Day paratrooper who is a member of the Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame, has been a guest at the D-Day paintball games. He's going back this year.

McNiece, who lives in Ponca City, Oklahoma, is dismayed how little young people know about World War Two. The Oklahoma D-Day event, he said, keeps the history alive.

Blind in one eye and deaf in one ear, McNiece is not shy about telling stories of his own experiences, whether it was when he parachuted into Normandy to blow up a bridge before the Allied troops came ashore or when he parachuted into Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge.

"We don't brag about it and we don't apologize for it," he said. "War is hell. It's a killing game."

He talks to the participants, young and old, and, with his wife, Martha, sells copies of his book, "The Filthy 13," which details his experiences with the 101st Airborne Division.

"It's unbelievable the amount of respect he gets, especially from young people," Van Der Plaats, the Florida marketing consultant, told Reuters.

Even though it's just paintballs being fired, the tactical maneuvering, frequently uphill if you're on the Allied side, is physically taxing in the summer heat, Van Der Plaats said.

Meanwhile, there's a cat-and-mouse game of strategy going on.

Both sides are known to use scanners to intercept the radio communications of their foe and aircraft have been employed to determine the enemy's positions, Van Der Plaats said.

Finally, if it all gets too intense for the paintballers, there is a "chaplain" available to talk it over.

Overseeing this with a certain amount of amazement is Convirs, who remembers the event's humble beginnings and the stories of his grandfather, who helped build 200 bridges in Europe, usually while under fire from the Germans.

"We try to make it patriotic and make people think about life," he added. "There's a lot of people who gave their lives for us to have freedom. A lot of people forget that."

D-DAY

Today marks the 67th anniversary of D-Day, the start of the Normandy Campaign. It was a seminal event in world history, but, particularly American history, an epic battle of good versus evil. G-d bless America and those that fought for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Today is also the one year anniversary of our very first protest of the Ground Zero mosque. Once again America faces another brutal enemy in the battle between good and evil.

When we called patriots to Ground Zero to protest a 15 story mega mosque going up in a building destroyed by Muslim terrorists on 911, audaciously named 'Cordoba' no less, thousands of proud Americans came and stood against the triumphal mosque on hallowed ground.

And we will protest this mosquestrosity again on September 11th - same time, same corner. Please plan on being with us on the tenth anniversary of jihadi attacks of 911. The Islamic supremacists are digging in their heels and refuses to consider the pain, grief and outrage their mosquestrosity is causing and so we will dig in our heels for the ensuing battle.

9/11 families were joined by immigrants from India, Russia, Egypt, Israel, Africa, Iran and Europe to show opposition to the construction of a mega-mosque at Ground Zero. Others flew in from overseas to speak or just to share their particular ethnic communities’ experiences at the hands of moslems.

These are parents and spouses of firefighters killed on 9/11. The rally took place just a minute’s walk from Ladder 10 Firehouse, where their loved ones were stationed for duty that terrible day. Ladder 10 lost seven firefighters.

Nikki Reed, Paul McDonald Are Engaged 'Twilight' star and 'American Idol' finalist appeared together at MTV Movie Awards

They sure looked the part of the happy couple on Sunday night at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, but what the world found out before "Twilight" took the night's top awards is that star Nikki Reed and "American Idol" finalist Paul McDonald have reportedly made it official.

After less than two months of dating, Reed was sporting a sparkling engagement ring on the red carpet, and a source reportedly confirmed that the pair are going to take the plunge. "He's the one. He's the one," Reed, 23, said of the bearded Nashville singer who came in eighth place on the show this year, according to E! Online. When McDonald was eliminated from "Idol" in April, he admitted they were an item, calling Reed "super-cool" and saying that she'd been very supportive of his musical ambitions. Us Weekly reported two weeks ago that the pair had shacked up at Reed's Los Angeles home and that she has been trying to help him land a recording contract.

While Reed was hush-hush about her own impending nuptials on the red carpet at the Movie Awards, she did weigh in on the eagerly anticipated wedding in the upcoming "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1."

"It was beautiful," said co-star Jackson Rathbone.

"It was stunning; it was like a dream," added Reed, who admitted that she was napping in her trailer when paparazzi helicopters buzzed the set during the shoot to get a peek at the fictional wedding.

E! Online, which first broke the engagement story, quoted Reed as saying that McDonald has been writing a bunch of songs dedicated to her and that he's planning on releasing a "Nikki Reed EP."

Halo 4 confirmed accidentally by Microsoft

Everyone expects E3 to be dominated by details of the Wii 2 and probably some more information on Sony’s PS Vita handheld. But Microsoft may just steal the attention of attendees and the gaming press with news of Halo 4 actually existing and being in development. That development must be some way along if Microsoft intends to demo the game at the show this week.

The surprise announcement has accidentally been revealed early through a headline on Xbox.com that introduced the game as news that millions of Halo fans had been waiting for, “Halo 4 is on the way.” Here’s the boxout someone on the Xbox.com team made live too early today:
News that a fourth game in the series is in development should come as no surprise at all. Halo is a cash cow and a system seller for Microsoft, and they will keep it running for as long as it remains popular. What we don’t know is what the plan for the game is, but it seems likely this will be an Xbox 360 game rather than a launch title for a new machine.

We don’t have long to wait to find out more as E3 is the intended place for the game’s announcement so we will know specifics in a few hours. Let’s hope it’s more than just a teaser video running on a loop.

Plaxico Burress has family, then football on his mind after nearly two years behind bars

Plaxico Burress plans to play in the NFL again, but first the former New York Giants star wants to spend time with his family, including a daughter who was born during the two years he spent in jail on a gun charge.

"I just want to thank God for bringing me through one of the most trying times in my life," Burress said to reporters after being released from Oneida Correctional Facility in central New York on Monday morning. "It's a beautiful day. It's a beautiful day to be reunited with my family. I want to go home and spend some quality time with them."

He hugged and shook hands with his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, before getting into a black Range Rover and heading for the Rome, N.Y., airport. Burress, 34, was expected to take a flight home to Florida to spend time with his wife and two children.

"He's learned an awful lot," Rosenhaus said. "He knows that he obviously made a mistake. To miss two NFL seasons in the prime of your career. To not be with your family, most importantly. To lose out on millions and millions of dollars. These are things that have forced him to certainly evaluate his life.”

Nine months after making the game-winning catch with 35 seconds remaining in Super Bowl XLII, Burress accidentally shot himself in the thigh with an unlicensed handgun he had tucked in the waistband of his pants at a Manhattan nightclub. He pleaded guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon in August 2009 and was sentenced to two years in prison.
Now he's on parole for two years and is required to find and keep a job. His attorney, Peter M. Frankel, says Burress plans to work out while awaiting the end of the NFL labor dispute.

"He's going to be a top free agent," Rosenhaus said. "There are going to be multiple teams interested in signing him. I expect him to get a good contract. I expect him to absolutely be playing."

Burress said: "As far as football is concerned, if and when everything gets settled, when they get back on the field, I'll be ready."
