Black hole devours star, sparking gamma ray flash

A monster black hole devoured a Sun-like star, producing a long-lasting gamma ray flash that probably won’t be seen on earth for another hundred million years, astronomers said Thursday.

NASA’s Swift spacecraft first observed the gamma-ray emission in March through a signal from its Burst Alert Telescope. Universe Today called the flash “the death scream” of the star being consumed by a black hole.

That death scream lasted for months and is still going on now, Reuters reported. Gamma ray bursts usually flare up and end in a matter of seconds or milliseconds.

The star was likely destroyed because it wandered too close to its galaxy’s central black hole, located in the constellation Draco an incredible 4 billion light years away. Astronomers say the incident is particularly unusual because this black hole was was sitting quietly, not eating much, when the star about the size of our Sun came into range.

“Here, you have a black hole sitting quiescently, not gobbling up matter, and all of a sudden something sets it off,”  Joshua Bloom, an associate professor of astronomy at the University of California at Berkeley, said in a statement.

Bloom said this kind of event happens once in 100 million years in any given galaxy.

New TV soap scrubs image of Mexican federal police

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico's latest drug battle does not unfold in the border badlands or remote mountains where opium poppies grow, but on the small screen, where a TV show strives to save the image of long-notorious "federales" by presenting them as crime-fighting heroes.
The TV series "El Equipo," or "The Team," is modeled after the popular "CSI" series in the U.S. and it was created to convince Mexicans, and now U.S. viewers, that the country has finally gotten its act together with a professional, trustworthy federal police force.
After a run on Mexico's Televisa network, with a middling 14.6 percent of the households as viewers, the show premieres on the U.S. Spanish-language network Univision on Thursday.
The series stars four street-smart investigative agents who are likable, honest and attractive. They rescue hostages and rappel from tall buildings. In every episode they get their man.
"We need to start changing the perception. There is nothing wrong with being a cop," said executive producer Pedro Torres. "Being a cop is a job that demands sacrifice and a lot of preparation."
While Torres says the show is his idea, the federal police have given the series so much cooperation, with access to its command center, equipment and a U.S.-donated Black Hawk helicopter, that critics are calling it government propaganda.
Police cooperation with TV shows isn't unusual in the United States, where scores of crime dramas have aired for years. But it irritates some in Mexico, where police shows are far less common.
One congresswoman filed a formal complaint with the anti-corruption ministry, demanding an accounting of public funds used to produce "The Team."
"It is immoral to try to change the perception of security through a TV show," said federal Rep. Leticia Quezada of the leftist Democratic Revolution Party. "It is bread and circuses."
President Felipe Calderon of the conservative National Action Party has increased the number of federal police agents from 6,000 to more than 35,000 since he took office in 2006 while beefing up background checks and qualifications.
Still, Mexico's cops have had trouble shaking their bad reputation. Despite decades of repeated reforms, federal police officials keep finding their officers, and sometimes even themselves, accused of brutality or corruption.
The National Human Rights Commission said the federal police department was among the most-complained-about agencies last year.
Two federal police agents with top positions in Mexico's Interpol offices were arrested in 2009 and charged with taking payoffs from drug cartels. Even the acting federal police commissioner resigned in 2008 and was later arrested on charges of aiding a drug gang.
Mexico has gone through a string of federal police agencies since the 1970s, promoting each in turn as a cleaned-up alternative to the disgraced agency it replaced.
Torres said he wanted to produce an American-style TV crime series, inspired by the new model under Calderon.
"They know that good triumphs over evil" is the slogan of "The Team."
The show portrays agents Santiago, Mateo, Magda and Fermin freeing kidnapping victims and snagging big-time drug traffickers. Their intelligence work tells them exactly when the capos arrive at airports or throw lavish parties, and they deploy SWAT-like teams of officers accordingly. They work undercover as electricians, waiters and pest workers to get close to their targets.
"No torture with seltzer water and hot peppers up the nose, no electric shocks, no bribes. It's more like the show is about the Swiss police, not the Mexican," quipped Mexican radio commentator Enrique Galvan Ochoa after "The Team" debuted last month.
Through Televisa, which dominates Mexico's television market, Torres got access to the command center, uniforms, large-caliber weapons and shots of helicopters taking off, including one the U.S. delivered to Mexico as part of its Merida Initiative to fight drug trafficking. Federal officers trained the actors and sometimes served as extras.
Torres defends the rosy picture of police work.
"Obviously if police are going to give you support, you have to show their point of view in a way that doesn't insult the institution," he said.
Public Safety Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna did not want to comment on the TV show, said spokesman Jose Ramon Salinas, citing the anti-corruption complaint.
But Garcia Luna recently told station Radio Formula that the series is an "important way to interface with the community."
Agents in the series often echo the department's public relations messages, including those encouraging crime victims to call police: "With no report, we can't formally respond," the actors say.
Many Mexicans say they don't report crimes to authorities, fearing they may be speaking to the criminals themselves. Active-duty and former police officers are also caught when officials break up kidnapping or drug gangs.
When Calderon recently celebrated Mexico's first Day of the Police, he asked for hard and honest work from the officers and respect for police forces from the public.
"We need to transform our police, but we also need to recognize the honor, responsibility and vocation of our good police," he said.
Torres said his show may lure more young people to join the force because many Mexicans aspire to be like characters in soap operas.
It happened before, Torres said. In the late 1980s, after he filmed a music video showing Mexican crooner Luis Miguel as a cadet, young men wanted to enlist in the military. Army officials could not confirm whether recruitment changed in those years.
But so far, there are no plans for a second season.
In fact, the police series was outperformed by another soap opera, Telemundo's "La Reina del Sur" or "Queen of the South," which chronicles the rise of a Mexican female drug trafficker.
Mexicans may still be more inclined to believe that a beautiful young woman can become a dangerous outlaw than that their country can be protected by a reliable police force.

Research In Motion Ltd (RIMM) $27.96 -20.86%

Research In Motion (RIMM) is reeling after posting better-than-expected first quarter EPS numbers, but revenues that fell short of Street estimates. The company also slashed its outlook for the second quarter and the full year. It was the subject of multiple broker downgrades this morning. As a result, RIMM is down $6.96 to $28.39 and falling to levels last seen in the fall of 2006. Options are heavily traded in the early going. 99,000 calls and 22,000 puts so far. The top trade is a Jan 30 – 35 put spread sold at $3.05, 29000X and probably rolls a position down in strikes now that the 35s are deep ITM. Implied vols are down 22 percent to 50.

Former New York Giant Says Gay Marriage Will Lead to Anarchy

News One is reporting former New York Giants Superbowl XXLII hero David Tyree is speaking out against gay marriage. David Tyree, who became a hero after making a game-changing catch in Super Bowl XLII, made a video for the National Organization for Marriage, warning of “anarchy” if gay marriage is legalized. “If they pass this gay marriage bill, what I know will happen is this will be the beginning of our country sliding toward … it’s a strong word, but, anarchy,” Tyree said. “That will be the moment itself where our country loses its grip with what’s right. Marriage is one of those things that is the backbone of society. So if you redefine it, it changes the way we educate our children, it changes the perception of what is good, what is right, what is just.”

Needless to say, Tyree's comments have gone viral and are being re-posted all over the web. It is America, so Tyree has a right to his opinion. Quiet as it is kept, Tyree's feelings are not his alone, but reflect the feelings of many people in the country and in New York, which is currently battling to make gay marriage legal. It's too bad that Tyree doesn't understand that the same argument he's using is the argument used when slaves wanted to legally marry -- it would lead to anarchy. It's too bad that he is too shortsighted to see that the same argument that he's using was used to keep interracial marriage illegal for so long. We're still trying to figure out why straight people think that marriage has something to do with them. Like all marriages including Tyree's, it is really no one else's business about what goes on in it. We're still wondering how people who live in a country where the divorce rate is 50 percent get the nerve to define marriage in such limited terms for other people. Clearly there's very little respect for the institution. If Trump, Tiki Barber, Guiliani and Weiner get to marry, then why not gays?

Quiznos lands new global location

People’s favorite toasted sandwich chain will soon be moving to Brazil, reports The Denver Business Journal.

Seven Quiznos restaurants will be open by the end of the year, and a total of 200 stores are expected to operate in future years. The Denver-based restaurant has teamed up with fine dining franchisee, Brazil Best Food Inc. (BBF), to make its growth possible. “Quiznos enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide, and this has led to the tremendous success of our international expansion,” said Lee Vala, Quiznos’ chief international development officer, the ImagesFood Bureau reports.

Luiz Antonelli, BBF president, also explained that Brazil is experiencing a demand for quick, warm lunches in addition to its growing economy. With Quiznos’ cuisine, training program and colorful logo, the restaurant serves as an “ideal partner,” he said.

While the new locations will provide food items unique to the Brazilian market, Quiznos also plans to further its expansion into more than 40 countries, including Argentina, Chile Ecuador, India and Kuwait.

Lady Gaga's Meat Dress Stays Fresh At Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame It's 'definitely one of the stranger pieces' on display, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame curator Jim Henke tells MTV News.

Oh, that meat dress! Nearly a year after Lady Gaga wore it at the MTV Video Music Awards, the costume made of various cuts of meat that designer Franc Fernandez and stylist Nicola Formichetti put together is still making headlines.

On Thursday (June 16), that dress will join the "Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power'' exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, where it will sit on display along with Gaga's childhood piano and Armani Prive orbit gown, which she wore to the 2011 Grammys, until February 2012.

"I was talking to Lady Gaga's managers, and this is probably around November [of last year], and basically talked about different things, and we talked about the meat dress and we thought it would be great to add it to the exhibit just because of all the notoriety it has, so that's basically how it came about," RRHOF chief curator Jim Henke told MTV News. "We thought the meat dress would really be cool."

So, how will the folks at the Rock Hall keep it fresh until it wraps up its stint there? "It's going to be in a case and we are putting some canisters in there to control the humidity, and then we have this other canister that soaks up the glutens," he explained. "But it's in a sealed case and we have the gels to control the environment in there."

However, it took some work to get it to the point where it can hang around the Rock Hall along with a number of other high-profile memorabilia without seeming super-gross. Henke explained, "We went back to Franc Fernandez ... ultimately what we decided to do, we sent it to a taxidermist, they put it into a meat locker and then we started working on it and created this [chemical] solution and treated it with that.

"And then they had a body form, and when it was still wet, they put it on the body form and then it dried on there," he continued. "And then they had to do a little bit of painting to bring it back and give it a little bit more color."

Gaga hasn't been shy about making the dress into jerky or wanting to have her extensive wardrobe in a museum, as she shared on "The Graham Norton Show." "I keep everything and dream of having a museum of all my clothes. I have an archive house for all my clothes," she said. "[The dress has] been jerked. It stank. It was fabulous. I never want to talk to anyone at those big celebrity functions because I feel awkward, and it was great — because it stunk, I didn't have to talk to anyone."

Having the dress in the exhibit is quite an honor and it's an interesting piece, but Henke notes this isn't the most bizarre exhibit at the RRHOF. "Definitely one of the stranger pieces," he laughed about the dress, adding, "There are some other weird things. We actually have [pioneering radio DJ] Alan Freed's ashes."

Ricky Rubio heads for the NBA and Minnesota Timberwolves

Ricky Rubio is leaving Regal Barcelona and heading to the NBA — specifically the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Rubio was the fifth pick in the 2009 draft by Minnesota, but he decided to play in Spain.

“I have finally decided to go to the NBA. I have a dream that now can become reality,” he said in a news conference. “The NBA will be very emotional, a difficult challenge but a very nice one.”

Rubio didn’t say anything about taking his talents to America, which is probably a good thing.

“It's a bit scary because I have never left Barcelona before but I am very keen to take on the challenge,” Rubio said. “I am not leaving because I think I cannot do any more here but because I believe I am ready and I am looking forward to it.

“I am going there to play against the best and triumph. That is what motivates me.”

Hacker group Lulz Security reveal password and login details for Facebook, PayPal and student's emails

Hackers 'tweet' 62,000 personal details
Leak "random assortment from collection"
Sophos: Blasts hackers as "schoolboys"
CRIMINAL hackers who crippled the CIA website this week have published student's email logins as well as Facebook and PayPal accounts.
The group known as "Lulz Security" dumped more than 62,000 personal details on Twitter yesterday, inviting people to try the passwords on everything from bank accounts to online stores.
It is claimed the passwords were downloaded 2100 times in the first 4 minutes after release.
Twitter was soon flooded with claims from individuals who said they had used the passwords to gain illicit access to Facebook and PayPal accounts.
"I chatted with some girl's boyfriend (on Facebook) and told him that I would never f*** him again. He said "no problem, I understand " wtf" - Twitter user @Pedacitodepan
"Cheers for the paypal account with £250 in it! ;)" - Twitter user @Murraaayyy
"Ordered a large pack of condoms for an elderly woman on Amazon" - Twitter user @RDisher
Emails and passwords of University of Queensland students and a high school student in central Queensland were also published along with logins at seven other Australian universities.
Lulz Security took credit for crashing the CIA website for several hours on Thursday and have also reportedly attacked Sony, Nintendo, the US Senate, the US Public Broadcasting System and Infraguard, a private company that works with the FBI.
The hackers said the attacks were "just for kicks" and that the passwords in the recent leak were "a random assortment from a collection".
"So don't ask which site they're from or how old they are because we have no idea," the group said.
"Releasing 62,000 possible account combinations is the loot for creative minds to scour; think of it like digging a very unique mineshaft."
James Cook University and Griffith University logins were also compromised but it is not clear if they were for students or faculty.
Representatives for both universities said there had been no intrusion of their servers, while UQ's director of IT services Rob Moffatt said none of the university's email addresses were breached.
Only one of the UQ addresses was still live and the password was incorrect, he said.
"We have investigated these claims and have ascertained that the group involved has not breached any active university accounts," Mr Moffatt said.
"UQ staff and students should not be concerned about the integrity of their university accounts.
"UQ takes these issues very seriously and will continue to monitor developments."
Queensland police said they were monitoring the situation.
Fraud Squad Detective Superintendent Brian Hay said the hackers had "delusions" they were helping people by exposing security flaws.
"The reality is these people are committing criminal acts and are stealing innocent people's details and publishing them to the detriment of everybody," Supt Hay said.
"They think they're clever and laughing now but they're taking on organisations like the CIA and the FBI."
The most cyber attacks on Australians was reported last year and this year was set to be worse, Supt Hay said.
"Queenslanders should regularly change their passwords to their online logins.
"You almost have to operate with the expectation that you will be compromised."

'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2' Trailer: What's New?

This sneak peek is full of explosions, knights, nostalgia, Death Eaters, betrayal, spells and, of course, our favorite dynamic trio: Harry, Ron and Hermione. Here are the three best NEW scenes that'll have you watching this trailer on repeat until July 15:

1. A kiss!
Squee! Harry/Ginny fans will love a split-second snippet of the estranged couple's climactic smooch. This little sneak peek has us even more anxious to watch the full thing on the big screen. Then, we can compare it to the last movie's Harry/Hermione kiss (nominated for an MTV Movie Award!) and determine whether Dan Radcliffe has more chemistry with Emma Watson or Bonnie Wright.

2. Hogwarts under siege
Between the Death Eaters casting spells upon an unprotected Hogwarts, the castle's knights marching bravely into battle and the Room of Requirement ablaze in Fiendfyre, there's no doubt that the final "Harry Potter" film is an action movie. Whether you're a hardcore Potterhead or you've only seen a few of the films, this trailer reaffirms that there'll be an abundance of OMG moments.

3. Dragon joyriding
One of the scenes from the book that we were most excited to see on the big screen is the breakout from Gringotts on dragonback. Well, imagine our delight to experience this epic escape in the new trailer! We get to see the creature burst through the roof and soar over the countryside before Harry, Ron and Hermione abandon ship and jump into the lake.

RBC's Heritage moment

Being title sponsor of the RBC Canadian Open is not enough.

Neither is joining forces with the PGA of America as its 'Official Bank and Patron Partner' or having a tour staff consisting of Luke Donald, Matt Kuchar, Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Fred Couples, Anthony Kim, Mike Weir, Stephen Ames and Morgan Pressel. (Did I forget anyone?)

Apparently, it's also not enough to sponsor the new Canadian PGA player rankings or to assume a vital role in grassroots and national player development in this country.

Jim Little, RBC's chief brand and communications officer, told me earlier this year North America's fifth largest financial institution needed more golf. His company needed it, he said, to further complement its global brand building strategy.

As of Thursday RBC has more golf - a lot more.

Becoming title sponsor of the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, S.C., through 2016 means a bunch of things, but here's what's most important: RBC saves an event ingrained into the fabric of the PGA Tour. It saves it from being either moth-balled or amalgamated with some other tournament and it puts it back where it belongs - the week after the Masters. I don't know what anyone else thought, but going to the Valero Texas Open after Augusta? That was just plain wrong.

RBC perhaps did not come in at the 11th hour like it did when it rescued the Canadian Open in 2008, but the Heritage clearly faced an uncertain future. Today the tournament not only has a new lease on life but it has a title sponsor that has quietly become one of the PGA Tour's most important business partners. Presently, RBC is the only sponsor to have multiple tour events, notwithstanding FedEx, which sponsors the Memphis stop and the tour's playoffs and points system.

Here are a few words from the principles. We'll start with Little:

"Becoming title sponsor of this classic tournament has provided RBC with a unique opportunity to associate our brand with one of the PGA TOUR's most liked and well attended tournaments in North America. RBC is very committed to building our brand and serving our growing client base in the U.S. and the RBC Heritage provides very attractive opportunities for our U.S. businesses to reach target markets and foster new business development."

Apparently Little and RBC spoke with up to 40 players about the Heritage, including some of his own Team RBC members. All said they would be at Heritage. That sold Little.

Here's what a relieved Steve Wilmot, Heritage's longtime tournament director had to say:

"My thanks go out to RBC for coming forward and giving us the helping hand we needed. This has been a rough couple of years for our beloved tournament; we have worked so hard to keep it alive. I want to recognize the important role RBC has played in saving the Heritage and keeping it in our community."

From a public relations standpoint getting RBC on board with The Heritage is also a collective sigh of relief for the PGA Tour. Commissioner Tim Finchem and crew would have soft shoed their way around losing the popular event but being this close to television negotiations with the networks avoids a critical landmine.

Finchem had a lot to say as he often does on the teleconference Thursday, but I found this pearl somewhat compelling:

"RBC is already one of our really good partners up in Canada, the RBC Canadian Open, and I can just tell you that this is a company that knows golf, knows sports marketing, is hands on, and will work with the foundation here to build this tournament on into the future."

As part of the five-year sponsorship deal, RBC will leverage U.S. network television opportunities to promote its wealth management, private banking and capital markets businesses to a coveted client demographic. In addition, RBC believes in giving back to important charitable causes in communities in which it does business. Through this new agreement, RBC and the Heritage Classic Foundation will inject millions of dollars into the economy and to charitable organizations within South Carolina, starting in 2012.

And according to South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, RBC also adds one more title to its business portfolio:

"Regardless of how big you are in the world, you are now - and you can take back to your company - that RBC is the official bank for South Carolina, I will tell you that."

Kenny Chesney touches down at the Linc in Philadelphia

Regardless of your opinion on modern country, country pop or whatever you call the songs and videos that get played all the time on the radio and CMT, it's kind of tough to find a hole in Kenny Chesney's game.

The looks are killer: 10-gallon hat, chiseled frame, GQ-worthy face. Tunes like "She's Got It All," "All I Need to Know" and new hits like "The Boys of Fall" are put up on a tee for him by crackerjack songwriters, but he's the one with the golden voice who knocks them out of the park.

So why wouldn't anyone with even a mild interest in country music want to check out Chesney's Goin' Coastal tour when it comes to Lincoln Financial Field at 4:30 p.m. Saturday?

How about the ticket price?

Admission to see Chesney and the Zac Brown Band is $99.50 on the low end, $246.40 on the high end (they're available at www.ticketmaster.com if you have that kind of change to spend on a rock concert). This isn't meant to be a whine-about-ticket-prices screed. Instead, it's an opportunity to express sympathy to Chesney's diehard fans, and to offer a few cheaper options:

» JD Souther and Jill Andrews, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St., Philadelphia ($25; www.worldcafelive.com). Remember The Eagles? Remember playing air guitar on the opening riff of "Heartache Tonight" or singing it out with Don Henley on "Victim of Love" to get over a breakup? You can thank JD Souther, who co-wrote those tracks and "New Kid In Town" and "Best of My Love" as well as tunes for Brian Wilson and Warren Zevon. On Tuesday, he'll be the one doing the playing. Knoxville, Tenn.-based singer-songwriter Jill Andrews opens.

» The Feelies, with opening act TBA, 8 tonight at the World Cafe Live ($20). If scientists examined the DNA of bands like Pavement, Sebadoh and Weezer, they'd find a similar strain of frenetic, herky-jerky nerdiness that can be traced back to the likes of Devo, Talking Heads, Television and the Violent Femmes. They'd also uncover a connection to New York's The Feelies, who threw more than a little jangle on top of their sound. Twenty years after their debut album, "Crazy Rhythms," put them on the map, they're back with a new album, "Here Before."

» Eastern Conference Champions, with Prowler and Illinois, 9 p.m. Monday at Johnny Brenda's, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., Philadelphia ($10; www.ticketfly.com). The Champs held a Facebook promotion earlier this year where they asked fans to request a cover tune for them to record, which they would then post online for free. The results had to have been fixed: They went with The Pixies' "Where Is My Mind?", which the band knocked out of the park and must have already been cranking while recording their recently released album, "Speak-ahh." The album is smothered in the reverb, dissonance and adventurous songwriting that made The Pixies great.

Guided By Voices

I think I've figured out why Guided By Voices never hit the big-time: People who read about them get bored with the long-winded story about the school teacher-turned-rock star and get turned off and scared by the band's endless catalog.

So let's try a different approach and get right to it:

If you don't mind patches of songs that are shoddily recorded, preposterously short or have weird titles, keep reading.

If you're into The Who or The Beatles, go buy "Bee Thousand" and/or "Alien Lanes" and keep reading. If you're a fan of Cheap Trick or the late-1970s power-pop era, go and buy "Do The Collapse" or "Isolation Drills" and keep reading. If you're a fan of early Genesis, prog-rock or anything weird, go and buy "Vampire on Titus" or "Universal Truths and Cycles" and keep reading.

If you've gotten this far, go to the River Stage at Great Plaza in Philadelphia tonight and see this band live. Wavves opens the show at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $39.70 at www.ticketmaster.com.

Soul Jazz Cafe

With its recently completed arsenal of high quality restaurants, Christiana Mall has become a place to eat as much as it is a shopping destination.

Concord Mall has answered, becoming a go-to spot for soul and jazz thanks to Café Riviera.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, the restaurant will host the Soul Jazz Cafe, which features Kim Pinder Garner, who performs Phyllis Hyman classics, as the headliner. She'll be backed by the Rick Tucker Universal Soul Band. The Best Kept Soul Band opens with a set of Motown classics.

UPDATE 2-RIM swoons on grim results,

 * RIM results trigger 22 pct slide in its shares
 * Some of biggest shareholders show signs of bailing
 * Citigroup cuts RIM to "sell" from "hold"
 * CIBC, BMO, 7 others cut price targets
 (Updates throughout)
 By Alastair Sharp
 TORONTO, June 17 (Reuters) - Research In Motion's (RIM.TO)
(RIMM.O)'s dismal results and failure to offer a clear strategy
to arrest its sad decline pushed its shares down more than 20
percent on Friday, drawing parallels with other technology
stars that have fallen from grace.
The BlackBerry maker's shares plummeted below $29, hitting
the lowest level in almost five years, the morning after it
missed some of its own limp forecasts and reported a drop in
quarterly profit. The shares are down more than 60 percent
since February.
And even more worrying, some of the company's largest
shareholders are showing signs of bailing out.
One of RIM's biggest investors, Jarisloswky Fraser, has
already cut its stake in half, according to Bloomberg.
Another investor is giving RIM six months to get its
business in order.
"I think in the next six months we'll have a much better
idea of where we stand," said the head of a fund with a major
stake. "They've laid out a business strategy and we're
measuring their ability to execute."
 LOWER TARGETS
At least nine analysts lowered their price targets on the
stock, most of them highlighting what appears to be a
once-dynamic product development pipeline that's running dry.
RIM admitted delays in revamping an aging smartphone lineup
and slashed what most analysts viewed as an unattainable full
year earnings outlook. It also said it planned to cut an
unspecified number of jobs. [ID:nN16217792]
"Bottom line, we believe RIM has no short-term fixes to
improve product portfolio, brand perception, to reinvigorate
share gains, revenue growth and profitability," Citi's Jim Suva
wrote in a note to clients.

RIM's difficulties bear a striking resemblance to recent
troubles at Finland's Nokia (NOK1V.HE), another struggling
national technology champion blindsided by the roaring success
of Apple's (AAPL.O) iPhone and handset makers using Google's
(GOOG.O) Android software. [ID:nL3E7H603G]
Some analysts drew comparisons between RIM and Nortel
Networks (NRTLQ.PK), the once-mighty Canadian equipment maker
that went into bankruptcy and is selling its final assets.
RIM's co-chief executives both sounded contrite on a
conference call with analysts. But analysts said neither
appeared to fully comprehend the challenges that lay ahead.
"The company is facing its greatest challenge, maybe in its
history, and each CEO continues to believe there is
unprecedented interest in their products," Deutsche Bank's
Brian Modoff wrote as he slashed his price target to $20 from
$45.
In the latest blow to its reputation, RIM has now has
delayed the launch of the touchscreen version of the Bold model
and at least one other device. That threatens its hard-won
relationships with North American and European carriers, which
expected the phones in July.
"We are concerned that RIM may have given them overly
optimistic launch timetables, which may end up alienating"
them, said Tero Kuittinen, an analyst from MKM Partners.
Cellular-enabled versions of RIM's PlayBook tablet, which
would give carriers a reason to push the iPad competitor,
aren't expected until autumn.
 LEADERSHIP QUESTIONS
The dim results and outlook announced on Thursday also
fanned questions about RIM's co-chief executives.
Deutsche's Modoff was disappointed that neither Mike
Lazaridis nor Jim Balsillie described the planned job cuts as a
reorganization -- which he would view as a positive.
Both brushed off criticism of RIM's dual chief with what
seemed "more of a staged piece of theater than a serious answer
to a serious strategic question," Modoff said.
RIM has cut staff before, in a 2002 move still known around
its Waterloo, Ontario, headquarters as the "10 percent purge."
That followed a dip in revenue and spiraling costs as the
company started selling its early BlackBerry phones via
carriers.
But it has been all growth since then, with RIM now
boasting more than 17,000 employees.
To be sure, there were bright spots in first quarter
results. International revenue grew 67 percent partly on the
attractiveness of its BlackBerry Messenger instant messaging
service. But that appeal may not be enough.
"The concern is the sustainability of that low-end market
that is working for them now. I'm not sure over the long haul
if that texting arbitrage is going to keep them afloat," said
Matthew Robison from Wunderlich Securities, who suggested RIM
may retract into a niche space serving corporations.
RIM's U.S.-listed shares were down $7.91 at $27.42 by late
morning on Friday. The shares fell $6.53 to C$27.80 on the
Toronto Stock Exchange.
The table below lists the price target changes on RIM's
US-listed shares:
 BROKERAGE       PRICE TARGET      RATING
 New  Old (In US$)
 BMO             55   80           Outperform
 Citigroup       25   45           Sell
 CIBC            65   75           Sector outperformer
 Jefferies       24   35           Underperform

Jesse James & Kat Von D Refute Break-Up Rumors; Plan Summer Wedding

Sandra Bullock's ex-husband Jesse James has put to rest rumors of a split from Kat Von D by setting a wedding date with the celebrity tattoo artist.

A report published in Life & Style magazine recently suggested the couple, who started dating less than two months after James and Bullock divorced last year, had called off their engagement.

But James is adamant the relationship is on track, telling People.com, "(The split rumors are) absolutely not true. We're still going strong. Things are completely good with us."

Von D adds, "That's the furthest thing from the truth."

And the West Coast Choppers boss can't wait to marry Von D: "That day can't come soon enough! Everything is on track. I am absolutely more in love today than I was a year ago. She's the one for me."

James and Von D are planning a summer ceremony on the one-year anniversary of when they began their romance.

Rebecca Black’s “Friday” Is Back Just in Time for Friday — On Vevo-Branded Channel [UPDATE]

Update: It seems as though Rebecca Black does not have an official Vevo channel at this time, according to a rep. This channel was not, in fact, created by Vevo. We’re trying to find out more about the Vevo branding and where the channel came from. Either way, it’s back! Enjoy.

Well, this is interesting. We all shed bitter tears Thursday when Rebecca Black‘s poppy hit disappeared from YouTube due to copyright claims from the girl herself. But today, my friends, is Friday, because the video is back once more (also, it’s actually Friday).

Looks like Black has moved to a Vevo-branded channel from her humble beginnings on YouTube. We’ve reached out to Vevo for comment. In the meantime, rejoice! This one appears to be the “Director’s Cut.”

Pentagon Arrest: Man Taken Into Custody Near Department Of Defense Headquarters

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Authorities say one person has been taken into custody in connection with an investigation into a suspicious vehicle near the Pentagon.

Pentagon police spokesman Chris Layman says the person was taken into custody early Friday and that one or two other people may be involved. Layman says the car is in bushes near the Pentagon's north parking lot.

No other details about the investigation were immediately available.

The investigation has caused road closures near the Pentagon.

In another incident earlier this week, a motorist found with a gun and what appeared to be a suspicious package near the Pentagon was taken into custody.

Compal expected to ship 400,000-500,000 tablet PCs a month in 3Q11

Taiwan-based notebook maker Compal Electronics is shipping 200,000 tablet PCs a month in the second quarter of 2011, and is expected to hike monthly shipments to 400,000-500,000 units in the third quarter mainly due to increased orders from Lenovo and Acer, according to sources from the supply chain.

Compal president Ray Chen previously pointed out that the company is aiming to ship 3.8 million tablet PCs in 2011; however, shortages of upstream components, especially touch panels, may create uncertainty toward the actual volume.

Compal has been aggressive in the tablet PC market and its wholly-owned touch panel subsidiary is expected to start production in the third quarter. Compal has also made investments in upstream glass makers in order to satisfy upcoming tablet PC orders in the second half.

Dragon Nest closed beta launches this week

If you've been anxiously awaiting the closed beta test for Nexon's new Dragon Nest MMO, you're in the home stretch. A new posting on the game's official website spills the beans on the closed beta date and promises a look at "the fastest moving MMO you've ever seen."

Nexon has high hopes for Dragon Nest, and the company expects the free-to-play title to be its third major American market success (after Vindictus and Dungeon Fighter Online) when it finally launches later this year. The closed beta was delayed last month (ostensibly to polish the overall experience), and you can view the fruits of Nexon's labor beginning on June 15th. That's assuming you've signed up for the beta, of course. You can also get a preview of the game courtesy of our hands-on at last week's E3 event.

Casey Anthony Trial Update: Anthony got "Bella Vita" tattoo while Caylee was missing

(CBS/WKMG/AP) ORLANDO, Fla. - On Tuesday, after a forensic expert testified about heart-shaped stickers found in Casey Anthony's bedroom, a tattoo artist testified about a tattoo he gave Anthony on July 2, 2008 that reads "Bella Vita."

Pictures: Casey and Caylee Anthony, Personal Photos

Bobby Williams, the tattoo artist, said he has known Anthony for seven years and that she called a few days ahead of time to make the appointment.

"Bella Vita" means "beautiful life" in Italian, reports CBS affiliate WKMG. Anthony got the tattoo while her daughter Caylee was still missing.

Williams testified that Anthony seemed happy when she came into the shop. Several of her friends have previously testified that her demeanor remained upbeat during the time that Caylee was missing before it was reported, the station reports.

Williams said Anthony told him Caylee was with her nanny, but when she made another appointment for July 19, 2008, she said Caylee would come with her for that. Caylee was last seen in mid-June and reported missing on July 15, 2008. Anthony was arrested on July 16.

The state said it will present the definition of "Bella Vita" to the jury on Wednesday and then rest its case early that day. The jury will then be excused for the day, then the defense will argue its motion for acquittal. The defense said it will be ready to begin presenting its case on Thursday.

Anthony, 25, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter and could face a death sentence if convicted. Prosecutors contend Casey Anthony suffocated Caylee with duct tape, while the defense says she drowned in her grandparents' pool.

Caylee's remains were found in a wooded area near the Anthony home in December 2008.

A lunar eclipse, not a solar eclipse, to occur tonight

Millions around the world are preparing to witness the first total lunar eclipse of 2011 Wednesday night. Viewers in parts of South America, Europe, Africa, Central Asia and Australia will be able to see what is to be the longest total lunar eclipse in nearly 11 years, according to experts.

“A total lunar eclipse happens when the moon, Earth and sun line up, and our home planet casts a vast shadow that engulfs the moon,” reported The Guardian. The moon will be completely covered in the Earth’s shadow for 100 minutes, making this the longest total lunar eclipse since July 2000.

The Guardian also reported that when the moon moves into the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow during the eclipse, it will turn a slate grey or brick red color. The color change will occur because light from the sun refracts as it passes through the atmosphere, which can illuminate the moon, according to AFP.

The Earth’s shadow will start to fall at 1724 GMT and will lift at 2300 GMT, and the total eclipse will run from 1922 to 2102 GMT, according to NASA’s veteran eclipse-watcher Fred Espenak, as reported by AFP.

The moon is expected to appear low in the sky, so clear conditions will be necessary for skywatchers to have a good view. The next total lunar eclipse will be on December 10.

A lunar eclipse, unlike a solar eclipse, can be watched safely with the naked eye. There will be partial solar eclipses on July 1 and November 25. The next total solar eclipse will take place on November 13, 2012, in a track running across North Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific and southerly South America, reported AFP.

Jeff Fisher reflects on time as Titans' head coach

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Former Tennessee Titans' head coach Jeff Fisher spoke with Nashville's News 2 Tuesday about his time spent with the organization and said he has no regrets.

The team announced in late January they would be parting ways with Fisher.

At the time he was NFL's longest-tenured head coach, having led the Titans for 16 years.

Tuesday, Fisher said he is at peace with the decision.

"[I] made a commitment to myself that if there was every a morning I didn't look forward to going to work and coaching I'd get out, and I had a morning like that and that was enough," Fisher said, adding, "The hardest part right now is you start to miss the players and the relationships."

Fisher, who continues to call Nashville home, said he is in great standing with the organization and has no regrets regarding choices that were made over the years.

"You move on, I have no regrets," he said.  "I had a great sense of peace when I made the decision. The hardest part was reminiscing as I was clearing out my office and then that last drive out of the facility was obviously an emotional one for me, but I had peace with everything."

As for the team's new coach, Mike Munchak, Fisher said it was an obvious choice.

"I knew Mike was qualified.  I felt like he was the best candidate for the job and I'm very, very glad they went that direction," he said.

"[Munchak] gets the up most respect from any player he has ever coached," Fisher continued.  "I think he's going to do a great job."

As for his future plans, Fisher said he has no plans of coaching at any level next year, but would eventually like to get back on the field.

"I think the situation has to be right.  I was fortunate over the years to be in the position to be surrounded by good people," he said, adding, "I have one thing left to accomplish as head coach, but again it has to be the right place the timing has to be right."

On Saturday, Fisher will host his annual celebrity softball tournament at Greer Stadium.

Therapist Diane Israel and Boulder ADL Director Amy Stein will lead a discussion following the film on identity, culture and Jewishness.

Sean Bean ‘Stabbed’ In Chalk Farm

TV and movie star Sean Bean has been injured during an altercation on the slopes of Hampstead. Bean was drinking outside The Hill, a well-to-do gastropub on Haverstock Hill, when he got into a stand-off with a passer by.

According to press accounts (warning: link goes to The Daily Mail), the Sharpe star took umbrage when the stranger made ‘lewd comments’ about his drinking companion, glamour model April Summers. In the ensuing scuffle, Bean was stabbed in the arm with a piece of broken glass and took a punch to the face. Despite being minutes’ walk from the Royal Free Hospital, the robust Yorkshireman elected to remain at the pub and have another drink.

Coincidentally, the injury came as Bean received a much more damaging blow on HBO drama Game of Thrones.

A rambunctious new beginning, then, for The Hill, which recently reopened after a major paint job. Our preferred pint’s over the road, however, in the much more characterful Sir Richard Steele.

Ancestry cures disease!

A new study involving an Indian-origin researcher has suggested that ancestry plays a vital role in different populations with regards to disease prevention and treatment.

The latest research from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and the laboratories of Floyd H. 'Ski' Chilton, Ph.D., professor of physiology and pharmacology and director of the Center for Botanical Lipids and Inflammatory Disease Prevention, and Rasika Mathias, Sc.D, assistant professor of medicine and epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, reveals how humans of different ancestry process a certain type of fat called polyunsaturated (PUFA) fat.

Chilton and other groups of scientists have shown that genetic variation in a small region of chromosome 11, known as the FADS cluster, plays a critical role in determining rates of PUFA metabolism in populations of European and Asian ancestry.

"This is an important example of why it is critical to advance the field of personalized nutrition," Chilton said.

"Understanding which nutrients may be healthy for one population, but not for another will be essential to optimizing public health."

"It is critical to study groups such as African Americans because they bear a large proportion of the public health burden of many of the chronic complex diseases of inflammation," he added.

The study will be published in The British Journal of Nutrition.

What would have happened if Derek Fisher left the Lakers for the Miami Heat?

Awaiting Derek Fisher at a Miami airport stood LeBron James, who had just days earlier announced in a one-hour "Decision" that he'd be taking his talents to South Beach.

Now the Heat wondered if Fisher, a five-time NBA champion with the Lakers, would be willing to do the same. Fisher was only three weeks removed from helping secure the Lakers' second consecutive NBA championship with his bread-and-butter qualities, including team leadership and clutch shots, and he hoped that would give him enough capital to secure a multi-year deal with the Lakers.

Instead, he had been left wondering his literal value as a free agent to the Lakers. Multiple reports, including those from The Times' Broderick Turner, indicated the Lakers didn't want to pay Fisher any more than $2.5 million for one season, a decline from the $5.048 million he had been making in the Lakers' 2009-2010 championship season. So there Fisher sat in a swank South Beach hotel hearing Heat owner Micky Arison and Team President Pat Riley make their case on why Fisher should join the newly assembled "Super Team."

Nothing ever came of that meeting. Fisher flew back to Los Angeles less than 24 hours after landing in Miami and eventually signed a three-year, $10.5-million deal with the Lakers.  Many in the organization thought privately that there would be no way Fisher would leave the Lakers, considering they drafted him in 1996, that Fisher has strong ties to Kobe Bryant, has a legacy mostly cemented in L.A. and has a long attachment to the city. Fisher, who insisted he wanted to keep "all options open" during the free-agency process, conceded at least that perception remained.

"I think there was an assumption that I was just going to re-sign with the Lakers before the process even started," Fisher acknowledged shortly after re-signing with the Lakers. "I wanted to make sure that all the teams I spoke with understood I consider myself a full free agent and I'm not handicapping myself to one place."

But suppose Fisher decided otherwise? His "decision" would've affected many moving parts within the Lakers and Heat that would have changed the landscape of the NBA season.
1. Laker fans would remain divided in blaming the Lakers' organization and Fisher.

Laker fans are already divided about Fisher's worth to the team. Some, including myself, have believed any of Fisher's declining abilities (athleticism, defense, shooting) are overblown and offset by some of his positive traits (locker room presence, clutch shot-making, team spokesman, challenger to Bryant). Some believe all those qualities are simply exaggerated. If there's this much division over Fisher's worth to the team, just imagine what would have happened had he left.

Some would fault Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak for letting a five-time NBA champion, Kobe Bryant's confidant and a veteran presence get away. Some would blame Fisher for overly inflating his market value and worth to the team. Some would praise Kupchak for understanding the need to let go of an aging player, no matter how valuable he once was. And some would praise Fisher for standing up for himself even if it came at the expense of leaving the Lakers for the second time in his career.
2. Bryant would have entered 2010 training camp pretty angry.

During each day of the free-agency process, Fisher kept Bryant in the loop surrounding each development. Their relationship stems to when the Lakers drafted them in 1996, where the two often practiced against each other, came to blows with one another and equally admired each other's work ethic and determination even if Bryant has proven to be the most talented.

Both accounts from Bryant and Fisher say that Bryant never put any overt pressure on Fisher to stay with the Lakers. Instead, they say, Bryant acted more as a sounding board for the day-to-day concerns and frustrations Fisher went through during the free-agency process. But it's clear Bryant played a role in Fisher coming back. Bryant, in his interview with reporters in early July, said six different times that the Lakers need to make any necessary concessions to keep Fisher. In his statement, Fisher said: "At the end of the day, there's one person I could not turn away from. Kobe Bryant asked me to stay but supported whatever decision I made."

Had Fisher decided otherwise, Bryant would've entered training camp in a pretty sour mood. Because of how close Bryant and Fisher are, I doubt Fisher's desire to go to Miami would've severely soured his relationship with Bryant. He likely would have directed more of his anger toward Kupchak, who had already received unfavorable reviews during Bryant's infamous trade demands in 2007.

It's hard to argue the Lakers would have missed Fisher's playoff presence because that was mostly absent this season, in addition to his usual struggles. Fisher's teammates may respect him for his continued efforts to provide a locker-room presence, aiding Bryant's leadership role and delivering Jackson's team message, but their unwillingness to follow the lead of Jackson, Bryant and Fisher show that his job  proved more difficult for him this season than in years past. But had Fisher been gone from the Lakers, Bryant and Jackson would've had an even more difficult time trying to get everyone else to keep the proper focus and mindset in getting a three-peat. The problems that led to the Lakers getting swept by the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference semifinals would've been exposed even earlier.

3. The Lakers would have had more urgency in bolstering their backcourt.

The Lakers have long maintained their need to improve their backcourt, but it never came at the expense of trading Fisher. In addition to the qualities I described above, one of Fisher's skills involved running the triangle properly. Since Jackson had already decided he'd stay for another season before Fisher reached an agreement with the Lakers, his arrival with Miami wouldn't have changed the Lakers' offensive system. But it would have prompted them to fill their backcourt at a much quicker rate.

Keep in mind that Lakers guard Jordan Farmar had already decided to sign a four-year, $12-million deal with the New Jersey Nets before Fisher would have resigned with the Lakers. So that would have moved up Steve Blake to assume the starting role, a dicey move considering how uncomfortable Blake felt playing with both the starters and reserve unit as Fisher's backup. But it may have pushed Kupchak to put more emphasis in securing Raja Bell, who ultimately chose the Utah Jazz. It may have prevented Kupchak from trading Sasha Vujacic to the New Jersey Nets for Joe Smith, a move that mainly addressed the team finances. The trade, in which the Nets also sent Terrence Williams to Houston, allowed the Lakers to take Vujacic's $5.5 million off the books and absorb Smith's $1.4-million salary. And Fisher's departure would've given Kupchak more reason to make a trade before the Feb. 24 deadline.

4. Miami would have handled the media scrutiny with a lot more maturity

I usually would have remarked that Fisher's playoff experience would have come in handy. He would have commanded immediate respect within the Heat's locker room because of his five championship rings. With that, there would have been a lot of episodes that Miami could have easily avoided. Fisher would have explained to James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh that it would be a bad idea to have a WWE-type player introduction in which they would talk about "winning multiple championships." He would remind everyone that going through a title run is supposed to be difficult and that they shouldn't shy away from all the scrutiny and pressure. And as president of the National Basketball Players Assn, Fisher certainly would've educated his teammates enough about the impending lockout that James wouldn't suggest that it'd be good if the league contracted teams.

Whether that would have resulted in an NBA championship is too hard to say simply because Dallas proved to be a formidable opponent. But Miami's chemistry would have forged a lot quicker at the beginning of the season and the Heat wouldn't have been as consumed with the sideshows, such as their public perception, the outcry over the revelation that some cried after a regular season game and the distasteful video showing James and Wade mocking Dirk Nowtizki being sick during the Finals.

5. The makeup of Miami's backcourt would've been different.

As The Times' Mike Bresnahan and Turner reported at the time, the Heat hoped Fisher would be their starting point guard.  But it would have been hard to determine how much Miami would have offered him and what Fisher would have accepted considering they added plenty of players to their roster. Consider the terms the Heat reached in acquiring James, Chris Bosh (both of whom signed matching six-year, $110.1-million contracts), Mike Miller (five years for $25 million) and Udonis Haslem (four years for about $20 million) and in retaining Wade (six years for $107.5 million).

Had Fisher been the Heat's starting point guard, neither Mike Bibby nor Mario Chalmers would have had the same role. It's conceivable Bibby, who began the postseason as the starting point guard, wouldn't have even been in Miami since he was picked up in early March after Washington cut him. The Heat would have preferred that scenario considering Bibby's playoff run proved pretty disappointing (28.1% shooting and 17 turnovers).

Chalmers, meanwhile, started 26 games and proved unafraid of the playoff pressure. As John Krolik pointed out recently in ESPN.com's Heat Index, his play came with both extremes. The good: Chalmers made timely three-pointers and jumpers, played pesky defense and thrived on making the big play. The bad: Chalmers made plenty of mistakes with head-scratching fouls, questionable passes and occasionally ill-advised turnovers. Had Fisher played with the Heat, he would've provided a much better alternative to Bibby and Fisher's stabilizing presence would've provided the perfect counter to Chalmers' energy.

Season 3 of ‘Hawthorne’ is off to an intense start with 'For Better or Worse'

Jada Pinkett-Smith is back as Christina Hawthorne with an all new season of HawthoRNe and there was no easing us back into things; no, season three kicked off with a fierce intensity.

The Tuesday, June 14 premiere, For Better or Worse, opened innocently enough with the wedding of Christina and Tom (Michael Vartan), but the calm didn’t last for long. The wedding was, of course, interrupted by a medical emergency. The happy couple got things taken care of at the hospital, but Tom was called into a meeting while Christina headed home to prepare for their wedding night.

As Christina left the hospital and into the dark parking lot, you just knew something was going to happen. Nothing good ever seems to come from a dark parking lot – especially on the tail of happiness...

Christina is viciously attacked in the parking lot while Tom is on the phone with her. She is nearly five months pregnant.

After a valiant effort by the doctors and nurses to save the baby, it is not to be. We watch the contrast of Christina and Tom going through the heartbreaking agony of delivering their baby, while Candy (Christina Moore) is giving birth at the same time to a healthy baby girl.

Christina is one incredible woman. She went to visit Candy, held her baby, who Candy named Hope Christina Sullivan, and managed to put on a brave face through all of it. She might have held it together while she was in the room, but she broke down as she wheeled herself out of Candy’s room. Heartbreak.
In an especially poignant moment, Detective Nick Renata (Marc Anthony) brings Christina a ring, but not just any ring, the ring Christina identified her attacker as wearing. The only words he speaks to her: "Sleep well." I still have goosebumps.

Coming up…

What a horrifying start to their married life; not only will Christina and Tom have to contend with the tragic loss of their baby, but learning to cope with the attack and the aftereffects from that…They have a long road ahead of them.

Being the workaholic that she is, Christina is probably hoping to lose herself in her work, only to discover that her job as Chief Nursing Officer has been given to her dear friend, Bobbie (Suleka Mathew). What will this do to their friendship and where will Christina go from here?

You'll Never Guess What The Most Googled University Is

The University of Florida.
According to a study conducted by Campus Splash using data from Google's traffic estimator, UF is the most Googled school in hte country. It gains "the most traffic from around the globe."
South University, American University, and National University finished second, third, and fourth, respectively, almost certainly because of their names. (Think how many people are searching for "south," "American," or "national.")
Three Boston schools -- Boston College, Boston University, and Harvard University -- came in ninth, 10th, and 11th.
Other surprises include South College (14th), American College (15th), and Central College (16th).

Elizabeth Hurley Is Single Again!

Elizabeth Hurley is a single woman again after a judge in London granted her a divorce from Arun Nayar on Wednesday.

The British model/actress wed the Indian businessman in 2007, but the marriage crumbled last year and she announced the split in December.

Hurley was prompted to make her separation public following reports she had spent two nights at a London hotel with cricket ace Shane Warne, who also confirmed his own marriage had been over for some time. The sportsman is now publicly dating the brunette beauty.

Hurley and Nayar began divorce proceedings in April and a judge at London's High Court issued them with a decree nisi on Wednesday.

Neither were present at the brief court hearing, during which District Judge Penny Cushing confirmed the relationship had "broken down irretrievably" and would be officially dissolved within six weeks, according to Britain's Daily Mail.

‘Gene Simmons Family Jewels’: Shannon Tweed discovers TMZ photo Continue reading on Examiner.com ‘Gene Simmons Family Jewels’: Shannon Tweed discovers TMZ photo

How weird and uncomfortable was it to watch the season premiere of “Gene Simmons Family Jewels?”  Voyeurism at its finest, we kicked off the premiere with Gene and Shannon Tweed at odds over a TMZ photo that caught Gene walking out of a “business meeting” arm in arm with two young blondes.

That sent Shannon, understandably so, into a crying fit, threatening to leave Gene if he didn’t go to counseling.  Which he did--a shrink to be exact.

As I watched “Gene Simmons Family Jewels,” the HBO series “The Sopranos” kept playing in my head over and over.  On “The Sopranos,” Carmela turned a blind eye to everything Tony did--until one day when she sort of stopped doing that and things came to a head.

I got the same feeling watching Tuesday night’s premiere.  And while Gene Simmons is in no way like Tony Soprano, I did see a bit of Carmela in Shannon Tweed.  Stuck in a long relationship with a rock star, Shannon has willingly allowed Gene to bask in his arrested development.

Until today, when (for whatever reason) the TMZ photo seemed to be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

The premiere also dealt with Sophie going to college, and we were treated to a home video montage that showed everything from Shannon holding a newborn Sophie in the hospital to Sophie’s first day in pre-school.

'Teen Mom's' Amber Portwood Threatens Suicide, Hospitalized

Police confirm a relative called police from the MTV reality star's house claiming that she was "depressed and threatening to end her life."
Teen Mom star Amber Portwood is in an Indiana medical facility after threatening to commit suicide, police confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Late this morning (11:34 a.m.), Anderson Police responded to a call at a residence in the 1300 block of Pleasant Meadow Drive.  According to the caller, 21-year-old Amber L. Portwood was depressed and threatening to end her life.  The victim, who did not appear to be injured, was transported to a local medical facility for further evaluation," said Detective Mitch Carroll in a statement.
"The incident is considered a medical episode, and accordingly, no additional comment will be made by the Anderson Police Department," he continued.
When police arrived, Portwood did not appear to be injured, but she was rushed to St. John's hospital for evaluation, TMZ.com reports.
A rep for MTV (which airs Teen Mom) told THR in a statement: "Our understanding is that Amber has been admitted to a local hospital, but we have not been able to confirm the accuracy of any reports being circulated and are waiting for further details. Our thoughts are with her and we hope to hear more soon."
Portwood has a rough few months: In December, she was charged with two felony counts of domestic battery, one felony count of neglect of a dependent and one misdemeanor count of domestic battery after striking Gary Shirley in front of their 2-year-old daughter, Leah.

Joss Stone Possible Target of 'Murder Plot,' Police Say

Joss Stone is believed to have been the target of a possible "murder plot" this week following the arrest of two men near her home in Devon.

Police apprehended the suspects on Tuesday morning after they were spotted driving around the village of Cullompton by residents. Both men, who are in their early 30s, were arrested for possession of an offensive weapon and going equipped to burgle/steal, while one was also accused of driving while disqualified.

But according to reports in the British media, the two are thought to have been planning to rob and murder the 24-year-old multi-millionaire. A source was quoted in a number of outlets, including The Telegraph, saying it was thought the pair planned to cause the singer "really serious harm."

The report quotes claims that the items recovered from the suspects' Fiat Punto included a body bag, swords and maps of Stone's country home.

A Devon and Cornwall police spokesperson confirmed that the two people, who remain in custody, "had in their possession information relating to an individual in the Cullompton area and items that lead us to suspect that they may have intended to commit a criminal offence." He added that the offices were carrying out "reassurance patrols" in the village and said that it was "important to stress that no properties have been burgled and no individuals have been harmed".

‘Cowboys & Aliens’ world premiere will be at Comic-Con International in San Diego

It looks like “Cowboys & Aliens” will saddle up in San Diego.

Filmmaker Jon Favreau had just walked off stage Sunday night after a sparkling  “Iron Man” reunion at the Hero Complex Film Festival, but his thoughts were already on a far-bigger spotlight moment this summer — Comic-Con International in San Diego.

“The worldwide premiere of  ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ will be at Comic-Con,” the director said of his hard-edged sci-fi western that stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde and Sam Rockwell  “And not only are we going to premiere it there, we’re going to find a way to include as many of the fans as possible. I feel like they’ve come out for me, they’ve supported me.”

The movie goes into wide release on July 29 with its tale of an alien invasion in six-shooter days of 1873 Arizona. To some ears, the title might suggest a bit of camp, but the absolute opposite is the case — the nine minutes of footage that Favreau brought as a surprise to the Sunday night festival audience showed intense Old West action and men with gun-metal eyes making hard choices in an unforgiving terrain. The audience gave a robust ovation for the footage, suggesting that Favreau might be poised to deliver his third big hit following the “Iron Man” films in 2008 and 2010 that combined for a billion-dollar success. This new film puts him at the point-position of a behind-the-camera team that includes producers Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and executive producer Steven Spielberg

Favreau said details are being put in place for the premiere, and that he would have more to say very soon. San Diego has been especially kind to the filmmaker, and he had shown a flair for showmanship and fan connection that (along with his acting career) has earned him  more than a million followers on Twitter. There will be serious logistical challenges ahead — it won’t be easy to carve out a spot for a world premiere amid the madness and din of Comic-Con week — but Favreau knows the San Diego rodeo better than anyone in Hollywood.

“That’s where it all started, and I want to give back,” he said. “They should have the opportunity to see it first.”

Katy Perry “Last Friday Night” Vid: Darren Criss, Kevin McHale

Katy Perry is going geek -- at least in her new video for “Last Friday Night.” Dressed up in glasses, headgear and unfortunate ’80s clothing, Katy stars as “Kathy,” a 13 year-old geek who wakes up after a big party and tries to remember what happens.

The video is a crazy cameo-fest: Glee stars Darren Criss (swoon) and Kevin McHale appear in the video along with “Friday” singer Rebecca Black, who plays Kathy’s best friend. Does Rebecca come out of the woodwork any time someone mentions the word “Friday”?

Even Hanson is involved, playing in the backyard at the party. Corey Feldman and Debbie Gibson star as Kathy’s parents.

Take a look at the video…you’ll be chanting “TGIF!”
